Gary C. Halbert - The Prince of Print and a Legend in His Own Time
The piece of wisdom I'm going to tell
you is priceless. If you use it in your business you will be able to sell everything when you want. Read carefully, it's the most important message for you today.
We start with an excrept from his letter "Best Copywriter" (May 12th, 1989)
The ability to write ads and/or letters that sell is by far the most wonderful money-making skill you could ever hope to acquire. If you master this skill you should never again have to worry about money. The ability to write copy that brings in orders on a profitable basis is as rare as hen’s teeth. And, if you can do it, I mean really do it, you can virtually write your own ticket.
You might suppose that the writing is key, and you need to spend the next twenty years to become a new Shakespeare.
No.
First of all, you won't become a new Shakespeare.
Secondly, the actual writing probably accounts for 20% of the succes in selling. Yes, it's important to write your ads "So Good They Can't Ignore You", but it doesn't require a PhD.
What does it require is a knowledge.
A knowledge of who your audience is and what their urgent needs are.
Gary Halbert describes it in this
example:
...if somebody was away from his wife and she was having triplets, then it would not matter how the news was worded (even in broken language)… he would be mesmerized.
also in this one:
Let’s suppose that you’re at a New York cocktail party, very sophisticated and there’s a beautiful woman in there. And, everybody is trying to hit on this beautiful woman and there guys that go in there that tell her they can get her into show business, there are guys that tell her they are multi-millionaires, there are young guys with ripped abs, there are guys that talk about their cars, you know,
there are guys that talk about how they own a modeling agency, etc., but you have some special secret knowledge that nobody else in that, all those guys in there trying to pick her up knows.
And what you know is that she’s a heroin addict and she’s dying for a fix. So everybody can make their pitch but you can walk over to her with a baggie of powder
and show it to her and say hey, I just scored some good scag would you like to try it out with me.
That girl will be out the door with you in a split second because you hit what she really wanted.
If you want an easier way to sell then you need to become a good knower.
For example, you need to know that safelist users really want best converting traffic.
You need to know that you can get such a traffic from just launched sites.
And you need to know that if you invite safelist users to a launch, even if your writing is in broken English, they will join... and upgrade... if you act quickly.
It was true during hundreds of site launches I participated in, and the latest launch of AdExchangeAds was no exception: 25 refferals, and 4 VIP upgrades from just two emails to my list.

Do you know what your audience wants? Drop everything, and think about it.
