Note: I'm on vacations, so this is a re-send of an email from 2019 that got a great response. Enjoy!
I have followed the strategy of building an audience of people who "Know, Like and Trust" me for over 2 years. I talk about this principle in many of my emails. I do that because it is so important.
Michael Hyatt is an author of many books on personal development and marketing. I highly recommend his books.
I read an interesting story about how one of Michael Hyatt's followers started a thread on Twitter where he was attacking Michael. The fan was complaining about how he thought Michael didn’t really care about people and all he cared about was the money.
Do you know what Michael Hyatt answered? He didn't try to defend himself or just ignore the message. He just replied:
"I'm not for everyone".
What a brilliant answer! Another iconic interpretation of the principle of "Know, Like and Trust".
Remember how you started your online business? Probably you wanted to help your family or friends to improve or reach their dreams. Maybe you wanted to quit your job to have more time spent with those who you love.
You didn't start to make something for everyone but because you wanted to make something for those who cared.
In other words, your work isn't for everyone and you are not for everyone.
However, it's easy to forget this idea. Often we start to think about who might dislike our work. We do everything to avoid their criticism. We adjust our style, language, and behaviour to be attractive to everyone.
That's a big mistake.
We shouldn't try to appeal to everyone. Look at Gary Vaynerchuk. He swears a lot and it doesn't stop him from having millions of fans.
Look at Jeff Walker who appears in his videos wearing t-shirts and not looking like a person making millions of dollar in sales.
They are not for everyone.
If we want to reach the level of success they have, we should model them.
That doesn't mean that you should start to swear. You need to be who you are. Instead, your best work is to build your true audience that like YOU, listen to YOUR message, and follow YOUR advice.
You are not for everyone so think about those who you are for.
Next time, we will talk about modeling. Watch for my email on Tuesday.
Please reply to this message if you have any questions. I would love to talk with you.
Thanks.
