Anyone who has read my emails for very long knows that I am a big fan of the idea of building an audience of people who know, like, and trust you. Building relationships is the key to standing out and getting people's attention in a crowded marketplace.
However, you have to always be aware that you cannot skip any steps.
The first step is getting people to know you. If they do not know who you are, then they cannot like or trust you. You need to get your message in front of them and get them to connect with you. This is what we commonly do with traffic generation and list building.
Once someone is on your list, then you can focus on getting them to like you. It isn't just a question of liking, but also appreciating the value you bring to them. Maybe they find your emails motivating, informative, or entertaining.
Once they know and like you, then trust can build. With trust comes influence and the ability to actually get them to work with you or join your opportunity.
You cannot skip any steps and you have the be willing to wait until they are ready to take the next step. Some people can trust another person more quickly. Others can take years for trust to develop. If you push them too hard, then that can short circuit the entire process and have them dislike you.
Be ready when they are ready to move forward.
