This email is a bit of a rant about something that I was feeling when checking my email the other day. Every second email in my inbox has a subject line like:
"Eugene Here's a Message For You from Joe" or "Eugene, Want More Traffic?"
Automated personalization of emails has gone too far.
Of course, marketers personalize both the subject lines and the email body because seeing your name is supposed to get your attention. It does work some time in catching your eye, but it is a gimmick and everyone receiving the emails knows it.
Instead of making me think that this email might be from someone who knows me, it immediately gives away the fact that it is a marketing email. I know someone is going to try to sell me something, so I delete the emails without reading it.
My friends and family are never going to send me an email with a subject line like "Here are 6 Reasons Why You Should Watch This Movie Eugene". That's not how real friends communicate.
Personalization used to work ... but it doesn't have the same effect anymore because marketers ruin everything.
That might seem like a funny thing to say since I am a marketer, but it is true. When a new idea comes out that is actually working, it is not very long until everyone is doing it. Then it stops working because everyone is doing it.
What works today, may very well not work 6 months from now. You have to be ready to change and to stop doing things that used to work, but now just make your prospects mad or makes them ignore your marketing!
