There is a saying in the marketing world that HITS stands for "How Idiots Track Success". It is very true.
If your goal for your online business is to the more hits (visitors) to your website, then you are shooting for the wrong thing. Most people want to earn money from their online business. Even non-profit websites or people trying to spread a message shouldn't be interested in hits.
Here is why.
You cannot have influence or make an impact on a visitor that is not interested and paying attention. Not every visitor to your website is the same. Some are more valuable than others because they are paying attention and actually interested in the service, product, or topic you are talking about. These are people that you can actually have an impact on, get to signup for your email list, or
sell to.
This is why what you want to focus your tracking on is not how many visitors your pages are getting. Instead, you want to focus on how many signups or sales you are getting. The volume of traffic is only one factor in how many signups you get. Conversion rate and the quality of traffic matter too.
If you don't track the right thing, then you will not focus your energy on improving the things that really matter. You might buy traffic from sources that are cheap and low quality just to get your number of HITS higher. That isn't going to help you accomplish your real goals.
