For the last week, we have been talking about changes you can make to how you work and schedule your time so you can spend more time on
the most important things to your future goals.
Unfortunately though, everyone else wants us to work to help them achieve their goals. They also have an amazing way to insert their goals into your day. It's called, Your Email Inbox.
Yes, that is kind of what I am doing right now as you are reading
my email. This interrupted whatever you were working on and now you are reading my email. I hope that I add plenty of value for the time you have given me.
However, most emails in your inbox aren't about helping you, they are about what YOU can do for the person who sent the email.
Brendon Burchard, the best selling author, calls the Email Inbox a convenient organizing system for OTHER PEOPLE'S PRIORITIES.
That is why you have to manage the way you handle your inbox very carefully. Here are a few tips.
1. Only check your email at
specific times of the day. Set a time block twice a day when you read and answer email. Restrict your email time to a specific number of minutes.
2. Don't leave your email running on your computer when you are doing other things. Only open your email client or browser email during the specific times you set to check email.
3. Turn off email notifications on your smart phone or tablet. Don't let the "bing" of email distract you from the important other tasks you have to do in your business.
4. If there are specific people, like family, that you have to watch for emails from, then create a separate email address just for these high priority contacts and leave the
notifications on for just that email address.
To move your goals forward, you have to make sure that you are spending the most time and energy on the important tasks to accomplish them. Email is rarely one of them that you have to spend hours at each day.
Get your focus and time right and the rest
will come.
